It has been a whole calendar year without any sport activity in the University of Benin; this has left many student-athlete hungry for organized sport as soon as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) called off their nine-month old strike.
The Office of the Director of Sports, University of Benin, has announced the Inter Faculty 5-aside football tournament which is slated to hold from the 11th-26th of February, 2021 at the various 5-aside pitches on the school campus; Clinical Hostel pitch, Hall 3(Liberty stadium) and Law field.
The tournament is open to both male and female student- athlete from the University of Benin as the Director of sport; Onakpa Emmanuel is an advocate of gender equality in sport participation. The females would be playing at the Law field while the males would use the remaining available pitches. The games will be played behind closed doors and temperatures would be checked in order to obey Covid-19 safety protocols.
The event would come to an end on the Sunday, 28th of February, 2021 as the organizers present individual and team awards to deserving players and team in what is described as the Ballon d’or night.
Onakpa Emmanuel, Director of sport, University of Benin emphasized the importance of the tournament and why it is crucial it is organized early in the semester. He said,” The 5-aside tournament is a fun way to get fit at the beginning of a new session. Many competitive small-sided tournaments help the players to regain their strength, keep them fit and prepare for more competitions in the session.”
