The 4th Afro Varsity 3×3 games will take place at the United States International University Africa on the 6th and 7th of November.
This year’s games have attracted 7 countries; Senegal, South Africa, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Zambia and Libya.
Makerere University has been preparing for the tournament and have expressed readiness before tip-off.
The Women’s team is headed by Coach Osito Jacob who listed four players for the games. These are Kusiima Bronnie, Tekitendwa Denise, Mirembe Esther, and Thelma Toskin.
The men’s team under the leadership of Coach Bajjunga Ronald has Ssemakula Charles, Ibrahim Sayid, Simon Kasule, and Bolton Rujumba.
The teams have been training under the guidance of Tony Drilleba who plays on the National team and has extensive knowledge about the game. He also represented Makerere Univeristy during the FASU 3×3 games.
Coach Osito Jacob stated that he had great expectations for the team. “I expect a good performance. Our players are average in size and I see that as an advantage.”
Coach Bajjunga equally holds high hopes for the Makerere Team. He stated, “We have been semi finalists thrice and finalists twice in the past five years and therefore expect nothing less than this performance from the previous years.”
Ndejje University is the current Champion in the men’s category and they have also confirmed participation in the tournament alongside Kyambogo.
The winning teams in the women’s and men’s category will represent Africa in the 6th edition of the FISU University 3×3 World Cup games in Xiamen, China from the 20th to 23rd October, 2022.
Other than the Ugandan Universities, other universities that have confirmed participation so far are United States International University of Africa, University of Johannesburg, Stellenbosch University, Kisii University, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology, University of Rwanda, Women’s University in Africa, University of Zambia, Copperbelt University and Institut Supérieur d’Entrepreneurship et de Gestion.
Makerere University will set off for the games on Thursday, 4th November.
