Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology is once again playing host to the regional university games competition. The University will host a number of African Universities as they battle out in the 5th Africa Universities Cross-Country Championship, November 20, 2021.
The Championship, organised by Africa Universities Sports Federation (FASU) in collaboration with host federation is held biannually and brings together over 200 athletes and officials from various universities in Africa.
So far, a host of African Universities have confirmed participation including University of Johanesburg, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Ghana, Makerere University, Maseno University, Meru University of Science of Technology, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Kenyatta University, University of Eldoret and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The 5th edition of the Cross-Country was to be held in Guinea Conakry but due to the prevailing political situation in the country, FASU identified an alternative host.
JKUAT and the Kenya Universities Sports Federation, (KUSF) were awarded the hosting rights of the event. “JKUAT is the ideal host for this championship owing to the fact that we have a cross-country course that meets international standards and we have hosted competitions of high profile in the past,” said Director of Sports at JKUAT, Dr. Peter Waweru Kamaku who is also the Chair of the Local Organising Committee.
He further said, that JKUAT has adequate accommodation facilities within the institution, which will act as the games village.
Having recently hosted the second Africa Woodball Championships, Dr. Kamaku reckons, the event will significantly market JKUAT and the country as the preferred sports and tourism destination in Africa coming shortly after the successful hosting of the World Athletics Under 20 Championships and the 2nd Edition of the prestigious Kip Keino Classic.
